Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment in Beaufort
Numbness in your thumb and fingers, a shooting sensation up your wrist, or a grip that gives out when you least expect it. Carpal tunnel symptoms can interrupt everyday tasks, from typing an email to holding a coffee cup. Understanding what’s happening inside your wrist is the first step toward addressing it.

When Pressure Builds Inside a Narrow Passage
Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve gets compressed as it passes through a narrow channel in your wrist. The nerve shares this limited space with blood vessels and tendons. When the area becomes crowded or the nerve is irritated, numbness, tingling, weakness, and electric-like sensations may follow.
The median nerve supplies sensation to the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Symptoms involving the ring and pinky fingers may point to the ulnar nerve instead, which does not pass through the carpal tunnel. That’s why an accurate diagnosis matters before care begins.
Why This Passage Gets Compressed
Carpal tunnel symptoms can develop for several reasons, and more than one issue may be present at the same time. These include:
- Repetitive hand and wrist movements that can cause tendons within the tunnel to enlarge
- Small wrist bones shifting out of proper alignment and reducing available space
- Work or hobbies involving repeated gripping, computer use, force, or fine motor movements
Repetitive strain doesn’t necessarily require heavy lifting. Frequent finger movement and sustained hand use may also affect the space available within the tunnel.
The Numbness Pattern That Tells the Story
Where you feel symptoms can provide an important clue. Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers may indicate median nerve irritation. Some people also experience a sharp, electric sensation into these fingers when the nerve is provoked.
Weakness can provide another clue. Testing may include checking how well your thumb moves across your palm because the median nerve plays an important role in this movement.
Symptoms can sometimes originate higher along the nerve pathway. Misalignment in the neck that places pressure on the nerve higher along its pathway or forward head posture that adds stress to nerves traveling into the arm and hand
Even your sleeping position may matter if the position of your neck places pressure on a nerve and creates sensations that resemble carpal tunnel.
When Tingling Stops Being Occasional
Occasional tingling after prolonged computer work may settle when you change position or rest your hands. An evaluation becomes more important when numbness is frequent, interrupts sleep, affects your grip, or makes typing, holding objects, and other everyday tasks increasingly difficult.
Testing Both the Wrist and the Neck
A thorough evaluation goes beyond checking the wrist alone. Beaufort Chiropractor Dr. Michael McKelvey uses orthopedic and neurological testing to determine where nerve irritation may be occurring.
This may include Tinel’s sign, where tapping over the median nerve can reproduce an electric sensation into the first three fingers, and Phalen’s test, which changes the space within the tunnel to see whether familiar symptoms appear. Thumb strength and sensation may also be checked.
The cervical spine is assessed as well. Nerve pressure can occur at the wrist, higher along the pathway in the neck, or at both locations at the same time. Identifying each area involved helps guide the care plan.
A Conservative Approach to Carpal Tunnel Care
Once the source of your symptoms is identified, care may include precise adjustments to the small bones of the wrist and chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine when indicated. Shockwave therapy may also be incorporated to encourage healing of irritated nerve and tendon tissue.
For patients with forward head posture, care may include postural and neuromuscular re-education. Specific exercises can help retrain the muscles responsible for positioning the head over the shoulders.
The goal is to explore conservative options before more invasive procedures when appropriate. Severe cases may still require surgical evaluation or referral, but a careful examination can help determine which approach makes sense for you.
Put Comfortable Hand Function Back Within Reach
Persistent numbness, tingling, or weakness deserves a closer look, especially when it’s interfering with your grip or everyday hand movements. By examining both the wrist and the nerve pathway through the neck, Optimal Health Chiropractic can identify where pressure may be occurring and recommend care based on what your evaluation reveals.
