When the Swing Becomes the Problem

Golf requires a coordinated sequence of movements that puts significant demand on your spine, hips, elbows, and neck. Many golfers notice neck pain most during driving, where rotational force and impact travel through the shoulders and into the cervical spine. Even small biomechanical faults repeated over hundreds of swings can create significant strain over time.

Most golf injuries don’t come from a single traumatic event. They develop gradually from the cumulative force generated by hundreds of swings, repeated rotational stress, and biomechanical patterns that go uncorrected over time.

Misalignments in the spine and pelvis set off a chain reaction, creating abnormal stress on the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support every movement of the swing.

Where the Strain Shows Up

Hip pain and sacroiliac joint dysfunction are among the most common complaints seen in golfers. Both often share the same root cause: spinal and pelvic misalignment disrupting normal mechanics in the lower body. Common golf-related injuries and symptoms we often see include:

  • Hip joint pain, bursitis, and iliotibial band irritation
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) with pain on the inside of the elbow
  • Nerve irritation causing tingling into the fingers
  • Neck pain from the rotational forces of the swing
  • Muscle and tendon strain throughout the lower back and upper extremities

In the upper body, golfer’s elbow is a frequent issue. The two forearm bones can become subluxated from the repeated impact forces of hitting balls, and sometimes from the jarring force of a missed shot striking the ground. Those “fat shots,” where the club strikes the ground instead of the ball, can send a sharp force back through the shaft and directly into the elbow joint, contributing to irritation and nerve compression.

When those bones compress the nerve running through the groove between them, pain at the elbow can be accompanied by tingling down into the fingers.

Recognizing When Pain Is Telling You Something

[buidlder_callout]Some discomfort after a long round is normal. But when hip stiffness lingers into the next day, when elbow pain greets you before you even step onto the course, or when neck tightness has become part of your routine, your body is letting you know that something mechanical needs to be addressed.[/buidlder_callout]

Our Approach to Golf Injuries

Beaufort Chiropractor Dr. Michael McKelvey has postgraduate sports chiropractic training that gives him the tools to assess and treat the full kinetic chain, from the pelvis through the spine and into the extremities. Care at the practice addresses three components: joint alignment, soft tissue rehabilitation, and functional movement restoration.

Manual and instrument-assisted adjusting techniques are used to correct misalignments in the spine, pelvis, hips, and elbows. For golfer’s elbow, the Impulse® Adjusting Instrument delivers a precise thrust that separates the forearm bones and restores space for the nerve.

Soft tissue work, including cross-friction massage and percussion therapy, breaks down adhesions and restores healthy tissue quality in strained muscles and tendons. Shockwave therapy may also be incorporated for certain stubborn soft tissue injuries as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation approach.

Simply stretching or strengthening the area often isn’t enough when the underlying joint mechanics and soft tissue restrictions are still present. Addressing alignment, movement quality, and tissue health together helps create longer-lasting improvement.
